Sleeping under the Northern Lights

In a snowy wilderness, 250 kilometres above the Arctic Circle, lies one of the most unique hotels in the world: the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort. Here you can sleep in a glass igloo under the Northern Lights. Before you doze off, enjoy an action-packed day in a winter wonderland. Kakslauttanen is a magical destination.

The Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort is not only a hotel but an experience. And the fun starts right at check-in. How do you carry your luggage through the snow to your igloo? By sled of course! Load up your suitcase and glide away. You can book a beautiful wooden cabin, but the most popular accommodations are the glass igloos. What could be more spectacular than watching the Northern Lights from the comfort of your bed? The glass of the igloos is heated so the snow melts and ensures you always enjoy a beautiful view. For more luxury, book the new Kelo-Glass igloos: a combination of a wooden cabin with a private sauna and an adjoining glass igloo. Watch the Northern Lights after your sauna; it doesn’t get any better than this!

Lapp landscape

Kakslauttanen lies literally in the middle of nowhere so this is the perfect opportunity to explore the Lapp wilderness. The resort offers a host of excursions. A popular outing is the husky safari, where you ride through the snow-covered landscape on a sled drawn by 6 huskies. Or travel by reindeer to visit an authentic Sami village. But the main attraction are the Northern Lights. There is a good chance you can watch this phenomenon from your igloo, but Kakslauttanen also organises special night-time excursions to more remote regions to watch the spectacular Northern Lights. Every night in winter, guests head out by snow mobile to chase this unique natural phenomenon. This is quite the experience: at night, the intriguing shapes of the snow-covered pine trees create a bizarre lunar landscape.

Fur hats and Lapp soup

Don’t worry about being cold: before each excursion, guests are provided with thermal clothing and overalls, mittens and fur hats. Not an unnecessary precaution when temperatures can plummet to -40 degrees Celsius. And you can always warm up with a delicious traditional meal served in the restaurant. Finish the day in style with a reindeer steak, Lapp salmon soup or moose steak.
